Lombok is
noticeably different to its close neighboring island, Bali. The north western part of the
island is mountainous and lush with tall trees, while in the south eastern part is much
drier, with less vegetation forming a lot of Savannah land. This is also as a proof of
19th century welknown naturalist, Alfred Russell Walace's theory, that this group of
islands of Bali was once separate from of mainland Asia. The straits of Lombok, is the
boundary, and known also as the Walace Line. The proof is also seen that large Asian
mammals are not found here, replaced by a large numbers of marsupials, lizards, cockatoos
and parrots, similar to the fauna life found in the Australian continent.
